Óbidos is a walled town about an hour north of Lisbon, and it looks exactly like the postcard until you walk the walls and remember your knees.
The first time we went, we stayed in a hotel inside the walls. There was a Chocolate Festival on, which is as extra as it sounds and exactly the right amount of extra for Óbidos.
The last time, November 2025, we went for the Christmas Festival. It was beautiful. Whitewashed houses, a blue stripe along the alley, cobblestone steps, and a magenta bougainvillea that takes over a whole wall. We posed in it like everyone else. No shame.
The best part is still not the main street. It is climbing onto the castle walls and looking out over terracotta roofs into the valley: orchards, the aqueduct, a round white sanctuary sitting in the fields. You can walk the ramparts and stick your head through the old stone windows. We did. So did the rest of the group.
Give it a few hours. If you treat it as a toilet stop between Lisbon and somewhere else, you will only see the shops.
You’ll be on cobbles and the wall walk more than you expect. A water bottle and shoes you already trust beat anything in the gift shops.
