Planning a trip to Portugal? Whether you’re spending a few days in Lisbon, exploring Porto, relaxing in the Algarve, or taking a road trip through the country, packing the right things can make your trip much easier.
Portugal is a country where you’ll likely spend a lot of time walking, sightseeing, eating outdoors, riding trains, exploring small towns, and carrying your belongings with you. That means comfortable shoes, a practical day bag, good organization, and a few travel gadgets can be much more useful than bringing a huge suitcase full of clothes.
Here are some of my favorite things to pack for Portugal.
1. A Good Travel Adapter
If you’re traveling to Portugal from the United States, a travel adapter should be one of the first things you put in your suitcase.
Portugal uses European electrical outlets and electricity is 230 volts at 50 Hz.
A universal adapter with USB ports is especially convenient because you can charge your phone, watch, earbuds, and other electronics without bringing a separate wall charger for everything.

Important: An adapter changes the plug shape; it does not automatically convert voltage. Check your device before plugging it into a 230V outlet. Phones, laptops, and many modern chargers are designed for 100–240V, but some hair dryers, curling irons, and other appliances are not.
2. Comfortable Walking Shoes
This might be the most important thing you pack.
Portugal is beautiful, but many historic areas have stone streets, hills, stairs, and uneven sidewalks. You may walk much farther than you expect while exploring Lisbon, Porto, Sintra, or smaller towns. Also, if there is rain in the forecast, try to find shoes that are non-slip because some of the old streets and steps can be very slipp
Don’t bring brand-new shoes. Wear them at home first.
Look for:
- Comfortable cushioning
- Good grip
- Lightweight construction
- Shoes you can wear all day
- Something that works with casual and nicer outfits
A comfortable pair of sneakers is usually more useful than packing several pairs of shoes.

3. Packing Cubes
Packing cubes are one of those travel products that seem unnecessary—until you use them.
They make it much easier to organize clothes, underwear, swimsuits, and other small items. They’re particularly useful if you’re moving between several hotels or apartments during your Portugal trip.
I like using one cube for tops, one for bottoms, one for underwear, and one for miscellaneous items.

4. A Lightweight Daypack
You probably don’t want to carry your large suitcase around Portugal all day.
A small daypack is perfect for carrying:
- Your water bottle
- Phone
- Camera
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Light jacket
- Portable charger
- Snacks
Look for something lightweight with secure zippers and several compartments.

5. An Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag
For busy areas, trains, markets, and major tourist attractions, a secure crossbody bag can give you some extra peace of mind.
I prefer a bag that stays close to the body and has zippered compartments.
You don’t need to carry your passport, wallet, phone, and everything else in one easily accessible pocket.

6. Portable Power Bank
There is nothing worse than having your phone die while you’re trying to navigate your way back to your hotel.
Your phone will probably be doing a lot of work in Portugal:
- Google Maps
- Translation
- Restaurant searches
- Train tickets
- Photos
- Ride-sharing apps
- Boarding passes
A 10,000mAh power bank is a nice balance between capacity and portability.
Amazon’s current power-bank listings include popular 10,000mAh options from brands such as Anker and INIU.

7. A Reusable Water Bottle
A reusable water bottle is great for long sightseeing days.
Fill it before leaving your hotel and take it with you when you’re exploring. A lightweight bottle that fits easily into your daypack is ideal.
For summer trips, an insulated bottle can also be nice for keeping water cold.

8. Sunglasses
Portugal gets plenty of sunshine, particularly during the warmer months.
A comfortable pair of polarized sunglasses can be useful for walking around cities, spending time at the beach, driving, or enjoying a café outdoors.
You don’t necessarily need an expensive designer pair. A comfortable pair with UV protection is the important part.

9. Sunscreen
Don’t forget sunscreen just because you’re spending your vacation in Europe.
You’ll probably be outside much more than you are during a normal week at home.
A travel-size sunscreen is easy to keep in your day bag and reapply throughout the day.

10. A Light Rain Jacket
Portugal isn’t sunny every day.
If you’re visiting Porto or northern Portugal, especially during the cooler months, a lightweight rain jacket can be extremely useful.
The advantage of a lightweight shell is that you can roll it into your daypack when you don’t need it.
You don’t need to bring a giant winter coat unless you’re visiting during particularly cold weather.

11. A Small Travel Umbrella
A small umbrella takes up very little room and can save you from getting soaked when the weather changes.
Choose one that folds down small enough to fit inside your daypack.

12. A Travel Toiletry Bag
Instead of throwing toiletries into your suitcase, keep everything together in one hanging toiletry bag.
This is particularly useful when you’re changing hotels frequently.
Look for:
- Multiple compartments
- A hanging hook
- Waterproof lining
- Space for travel-size bottles

13. A Travel Pillow for the Flight
If you’re flying several hours to Portugal, a travel pillow can make the journey much more comfortable.
A compact neck pillow is especially useful if you plan to sleep on the plane.

14. A Small Laundry Bag
This is one of the simplest things you can pack—and one of the most useful.
Bring a lightweight laundry bag for dirty clothes so they don’t get mixed together with everything else in your suitcase.
If you’re traveling for more than a week, doing laundry once during the trip can also allow you to pack much less.

15. A Portable Luggage Scale
If you’re flying around Europe or taking multiple flights, a small luggage scale can help you avoid surprises at the airport.
It’s especially useful if you’re bringing souvenirs home.
Portuguese ceramics, wine, canned foods, clothing, and other souvenirs can add weight surprisingly quickly!

What NOT to Overpack for Portugal
One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is bringing too much.
You probably don’t need:
- Five pairs of shoes
- A different outfit for every day
- Full-size toiletries
- Multiple heavy jackets
- Expensive jewelry
- A giant suitcase
- Lots of appliances
Instead, pack clothing that can be mixed and matched.
For a one- to two-week trip, I would rather have 10 versatile outfits and comfortable shoes than 20 outfits and a suitcase that is impossible to move.
My Portugal Packing Formula
If I were packing for Portugal, my basic formula would be:
Clothing:
7–10 tops + 3–4 bottoms + underwear + socks + pajamas + one nicer outfit
Shoes:
1 excellent pair of walking shoes + sandals or a second lightweight pair
Travel gear:
Daypack + packing cubes + power bank + travel adapter
Weather:
Sunglasses + sunscreen + light rain jacket
Toiletries:
Travel-size essentials in a toiletry bag
Documents:
Passport + travel documents + copies/backups of important information
The One Thing I Wouldn’t Skip
If I had to choose just a few things to prioritize, I’d pick:
Comfortable walking shoes + a good daypack + a power bank + a European travel adapter + packing cubes.
Those five items can make a surprisingly big difference in how comfortable your trip feels.
Portugal is a country that’s best experienced outside—walking through historic neighborhoods, sitting at cafés, exploring coastal towns, taking scenic train rides, and discovering places that weren’t necessarily on your original itinerary.
So pack light, bring comfortable shoes, leave a little room in your suitcase for souvenirs, and get ready to explore. 🇵🇹
